Blood carboxyhaemoglobin changes during tobacco smoking.
نویسنده
چکیده
Using multiple samples collected via an indwelling venous cannula changes in blood carboxyhaemoglobin (COHb) were studied in five subjects before, during and up to 24 hr after smoking. On average the smoking, with inhalation, of one cigarette in 64 min raised the % COHb by 1-6, compared with 2-2 for 24 min of inhaled cigar smoking and only 0-2 for 20 min of non-inhaled pipe smoking. It is suggested that it may be paradoxically safer to smoke high rather than low nicotine cigarettes as those with a high nicotine content will tend to be inhaled less.

متن کاملSmoking habits and carboxyhaemoglobin. A cross-sectional study of an urban population of middle-aged men.
In this cross-sectional population study we report on the distribution of carboxyhaemoglobin concentrations in the morning, before smoking, in an urban population of 1037 men born in 1931. The median concentration was the same in non-smokers as in ex-smokers: 0.5%. It increased with increasing daily tobacco consumption. But when carboxyhaemoglobin concentrations are measured in reasonably well-...
متن کاملUse of carboxyhaemoglobin levels to predict the development of diseases associated with cigarette smoking.
Carboxyhaemoglobin (COHb) levels in tobacco smokers vary throughout the day since they are affected by the pattern of tobacco consumption and the rate at which COHb is eliminated. A method is described whereby a single COHb measurement together with a recent smoking history may be used to estimate the average COHb "boost" produced by each cigarette, the total daily carbon monoxide (CO) uptake f...
متن کاملhaemorheological changes associated with cigarette smoking
A prospective study was undertaken to establish the haematologicakand haemorheological changes associated with long standing cigarette smoking in 20 heavy smokers and to assess whether any such changes were reversible after smoking was stopped. Highly significant differences were observed in whole blood viscosity, plasma viscosity, plasma fibrinogen concentrations, packed cell volume, and carbo...
